This classroom action study explores the use of literature-based assignments as scaffolding to improve students’ reading skills in the Business Reading 1 course at STIKS Tarakanita. The study was initiated after students’ mid-term examination results indicated unsatisfactory performance in reading comprehension, vocabulary, and grammar. To address this issue, two assignment programs, namely Book Report and Weekly Report, were implemented to increase students’ exposure to reading and writing activities. Students were required to complete progressively more challenging writing tasks while receiving regular written feedback from the lecturer. The findings indicate that although students initially demonstrated limited writing ability and frequent grammatical and punctuation errors, continuous practice accompanied by constructive feedback gradually improved their language proficiency, reading comprehension, and motivation to learn. The study concludes that integrating literary reading with structured writing assignments provides effective scaffolding for developing English reading skills and encourages greater student engagement in the learning process.
